Want to learn how to make a piano tutorial video?

Nowadays, Youtube is one of the most popular platforms to learn piano online. While any educational video style can have an audience, piano tutorial videos that show people how to play songs are highly preferred by beginners who want to learn piano effortlessly.

Considering this, you might want to create youtube piano tutorials at home in pursuit of making extra income as a piano player.

However, your tutorial videos should be visually appealing to stand out if you want to attract more attention. In addition to this, your videos should show what your hands are doing, what notes you are pressing, and your hand position visibly and clearly.

Piano YouTubers like HDpiano and many more are using certain apps to create stunning piano tutorials with colorful particles and animations appearing on the keys.

Having these kinds of visual representations integrated into your videos will be much more effective for your audience.

The best way to make this is by using apps like Synthesia or Seemusic.

In this post, I will show you the same methods all the piano YouTubers are following so that you can also make your piano tutorials both informative and visually appealing!

Let’s get started.

1-Record Your Audio in the Midi Format

Either you are using Synthesia or Seemusic, this is the first thing you should do since all of the apps and software will need your midi information for their systems to recognize what notes you are playing.

If you don’t know what midi is or how to record your audio in the midi format, you can read this post. Basically, you need a simple Midi editor or a DAW to record your notes, along with a digital piano/midi keyboard, a cable, and a computer.

For the midi editor, you can prefer using Anvil Studio since it is free and quite functional. For DAW, there many options out there but Logic, Ableton Lite, or even Garageband can work for you. You don’t need to buy the pro versions of any DAW if you only want to use the midi function since even the simplest DAW will have that feature.

2-Get The Audio For Your Midi

If you know a little about MIDI, you probably know that it is not an audio file, but only the digital information that your laptop receives from your instrument through the cable. What this means is that you need to assign a sound to your midi message, which you can do by using VSTs. You can download some free piano VSTs or your DAW may already have one.

After you are done with assigning your sound to your MIDI file in your DAW, you need to export your midi. Now your audio is ready!

3-Create Your Piano Visual with Synthesia

This is the most important part of the process since this step is where you create your piano visual. The most popular program to make the piano tutorial videos is Synthesia. Though you have to pay for this app, it will make everything much easier.

After you get the app, you need to import your MIDI file there. Synthesia will read the information on your MIDI and it will start playing it on the virtual piano when you select the MIDI you want from your list.

At this point, you should also have a screen recording software to record the video of the piano while it is playing and showing all the notes. Some of the best free screen recording software you can download is Bandicam or Camtasia.

Stop the screen recording when the video finishes and we will move on to the last step!

4-Put Your Video And Sound Together

Now that you have the audio of the song and the video from the screen recording of Synthesia piano, you are ready to put them together with a simple video editing.

Open your video editing program, import both your audio and sound into the software. Add your sound on the video and your video should be ready!

An Alternative Way Without Using Synthesia

You may not want to invest in Synthesia right from the beginning. That is why I wanted to include an alternative way of making your tutorials beautiful without purchasing Synthesia.

While this method requires more effort than the previous one, you can still get amazing results by implementing the steps that are presented in the video.

Conclusion

I hope you have a better idea now on how to make piano tutorial videos.
